Combined Simulation, DMT and PCT

Prior to OSCAM Ship v8.4 there were separate executable applications for the main OSCAM Simulation tool, the Data Management Tool and the Parametric Costing Tool. These tools share a great deal of common functionality but each also has unique features. Ultimately, the purpose of the Data Management Tool and the Parametric Costing Tool is to generate an OSCAM input data record that can be run in the Simulation tool.

With OSCAM Ship v8.4 the functionality of the three separate tools has been combined into a single application. The application has different modes that allow switching between the functionality of the three tools but avoids the need to start up and close down different applications.

OSCAM Ship has three modes of operation which can be switched between freely during a session:

SIM - standard OSCAM mode used to prepare input data, run simulations and view results. It provides a Sensitivity Tool for analyzing the impact of individual inputs on Total Operating & Support costs, and an Uncertainty Tool that allows input values to be represented as distributions and uses Monte Carlo analysis to view cost outputs as an S-Curve.

DMT - the Data Management Tool mode allows a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to be defined for a ship with Organizational and Intermediate Level Maintenance data specified for the lowest level of the WBS. The maintenance data is aggregated up to the whole ship level, which can then be transferred to the OSCAM data record. The DMT mode has all of the facilities to load, edit and save input data but has no simulation capability. Switch to SIM mode once the WBS data has been transferred to the data record to run the simulation and view the results.

PCT - the Parametric Costing Tool allows ship or submarine characteristics to be defined and then populates high-level OSCAM inputs based on regression analysis of historical data from VAMOSC. The PCT has all of the facilities to load, edit and save input data but has no simulation capability. Switch to SIM mode once the PCT cost estimating relationship data has been transferred to the data record to run the simulation and view the results.

The current mode is displayed on the left-hand button on the main toolbar, and is also reflected in the main application window caption.

Click on the mode button to display a drop-down menu that allows selection of a different mode. This can also be done from the main Tools menu item. Switching modes will cause a change in the buttons available on the toolbar and the menu options, as well as a change in the background graphics on the main screen.

On switching modes the toolbar and menu items will change to reflect the options available for the selected mode. If you have made changes to the WBS (in the Data Management Tool) or the Characteristics (in the Parametric Costing Tool) and not transferred those changes to the OSCAM data record then you will be warned on switching modes that you have not transferred the changes. You can cancel the mode switch and then transfer the changes or continue with the mode switch. The changes will still be available if you switch back to the mode later.

On exiting OSCAM a check will be made to determine if there are unsaved changes to the OSCAM data record, WBS or PCT characteristics files and a warning dialog will be displayed with an option to cancel the exit. If you choose not to exit OSCAM then the mode will automatically be switched to the one that allows access to the required Save options for the unsaved file types (unless both WBS and Characteristics need saving).
